Let’s be fashionably realistic. What we wear should not be determined by labels. It’s how you wear something. As people we can pick up something in the store, but we do not feel truly confident in what we wear. Fashion can be expensive. As consumers we want those high-end fashion looks to feel authentic, but sometimes that is not the case. You do not need a $1,000 dress to feel special or iconic. By being a stylist, I have always learned that being on a budget can be easy, but also difficult at the same time. It is okay to go to a thrift store or using a cut up pair of jeans to create uncycled and sustainable clothing.

1. Thrift Stores Are Goldmines.

When people hear thrift stores, they hear cheap, quality, and sustainable clothing at an affordable price. Entering into a thrift store, think like a stylist.

  • Find clothes that match your size and style.

  • Be confident in what you select.

  • Find signature pieces that will elevate your style.

  • Find statement accessories including belts, bags, and sunglasses that will elevate your style.

Tip: When you walk into the store, think about how you can elevate a piece of clothes. For example, you can buy a blazer and use a belt as a corset to make it even powerful.

2. Mixed Highs-Lows Together.

Everything in your wardrobe or outfit needs to be a designer—or even dirt cheap. As a stylist, you need to master how to mix the highs with the lows to give your style more elevation and opportunities to grow. Having the knowledge to mix high and low fashion will help you in long when you want to pair affordable pieces with high-end designer brands.

3. Style Over Spend On Extra Clothes.

It’s not what you wear or what designer brand you picked up—it’s how you wear something. Being able to use styling tricks can replenish your wardrobe.

Use these methods:

  • Take a shirt in your closet and tuck in your shirt to change your silhouette.

  • Use layers strategically to accomplish a look including adding a vest, blazer, flannel, or hoodie to add more depth to your outfit.

  • Cuff your pants or sleeves to accomplish a tailored look.

  • Add a belt to reshape a loose outfit, including baggy jeans or a oversized blazer.

4. Shop Smart, Not Fast.

Fast fashion might seem affordable, but it does not always have to be your first option. Fast fashion lacks quality due to the labor conditions that workers must endured. Instead, shop intentionally so that you can find quality clothes that last longer.

To shop smart, not fast:

  • Sign up for email discounts and use student codes to access deals

  • Shop off-season to get the best deals.

  • Use price-drop tools or apps like Honey or Karma.

  • Buy secondhand clothes from sites like (Depop, Poshmark, or Vinte).

5. Confidence should be your currency.

It does not matter if you spent $5 on your fit—what matters is how slay you slay with confidence and demure. Confidence is about acting in spontaneity while remaining intentional. It’s not about the price tag; it’s about creating something sustainable, iconic, and innovative.

Budget does not mean boring. It means being intentional, innovative, and sustainable—within a budget you can afford. Fashion is a tool for exploring identity and self-expression; it should not about price competitive. The ability to stay within a budget and still slay with flair shows true confidence and the power of being unapologetically yourself.
