When Fashion Becomes Protest.

For people of color, especially within Black and Brown communities, self-expression is unapologetically and boldly political. Black Dandyism became a source of rebellion — a revolutionary tactic rooted in sharp suits, polished shoes, and bold color palettes. When it comes to Black hairstyles — including locs, afros, and protective styles — they’ve often been labeled as “haggard,” “unkempt,” or unprofessional in schools and work places. The freedom to wear what you want, to express your culture, or to speak in your natural voice often comes with a trade-off: safety or social acceptance. While some are praised for their “bohemian” aesthetic, others are punished for simply wearing locs in the workplace.
